Merino, who joined Arsenal during the summer transfer window, scored his first goal for the club in Sunday’s match. The Spanish midfielder connected with Declan Rice’s excellent free kick to nod the ball into Caoimhin Kelleher’s net.

The goal was quickly reviewed by VAR, as there was uncertainty about Merino’s offside position. After a lengthy check, the goal was awarded, giving Arsenal a 2-1 lead at half-time, which left some Liverpool fans confused.

The Premier League’s official “Match Centre” account on X clarified why the goal stood, stating: “The referee’s goal call was confirmed by VAR, as there were no attackers offside.”

Premier League title race: Liverpool leads the standings early in 2024. Bukayo Saka opened the scoring for Arsenal in the ninth minute, with Virgil van Dijk equalizing soon after. Merino’s header came just before half-time. “The first half has been fantastic,” commented Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville.
