The Memphis Grizzlies are parting ways with veteran point guard Derrick Rose, a move first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic. Rose was in the midst ouf the second year of a two-year, $6.5 million contract that he signed in the summer of 2023. He played in only 24 games last season, averaging 8.0 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. Grizzlies beat writer Drew Hill later provided additional insights regarding Rose’s exit from the team. Reportedly, Rose requested his release, and Memphis agreed to a buyout.
The team felt reassured in making this decision following Scotty Pippen Jr.’s strong performances this summer.
Rose is not assured of signing with another franchise. According to Ian Begley of SNY, Rose plans to provide an update on his future later this week, and many speculate that this announcement might be related to his retirement. Derrick Rose began his career as the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft with his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls. He was awarded the NBA MVP title in 2011, making him the youngest player ever to achieve this milestone, and was anticipated to be the league’s next major star.
However, an ACL injury in 2012, along with subsequent injuries, hampered Rose’s career. The Bulls traded him to the New York Knicks in 2016 when it became clear he had not returned to his former self. Rose then turned into a journeyman, playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Detroit Pistons, before returning to the Knicks and eventually joining Memphis. If he decides to retire, Rose will leave with three All-Star selections and one All-NBA First Team accolade on his record. His career statistics include averages of 17.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game.
